Ear infections come in all shapes and sizes and the wording can be confusing. Middle ear infections are cases where the part of the ear that goes from the ear drum to eustachian tube is congested and inflamed. These are the most common ear infections in infants and young children. It usually starts with just a “cold” or respiratory illness and then mucous like fluid builds up in the middle space. If the eustachian tube works, the fluid clears in time. If it does not, the fluid is very likely to get infected. Symptoms can vary widely and could include such things pain and pressure, fever, concurrent nasal congestion , and changes in dietary and sleeping habits and some cases pus coming out through a ruptured ear drum.. Most symptomatic infections need treatment and the mainstay of therapy remains antibiotics. More and more however, kids infections are showing signs of resistance to antibiotics or the symptoms are just too much for the child and sometimes, the family. In these cases , the option of a procedure known as myringotomy and tube insertion is valid approach to talk with your doctor about.

In the past few years a new procedure to treat recurent sinus infections has evolved. Balloon Sinuplasty is a relatively new technique that in many cases will be done in the office arena and not the operating room! It involves “stretching open” the sinus as oposed to cutting them open or excising parts of the sinus as is done in the operating room. The procedure is done relatively quickly and the pain level is remarkably low. Is it for everbody who suffers from sinus troubles? No way. The best use of the ballon procedure is to help patients who have multiple recurrent sinus infections. It is not typically for folks who have problematic congestion, drainage, or pressure. Answers to those complaints are out there, but it’s not going to be simple ballon procedure. Before doing a balloon procedure, a thorough work up by an ENT doctor is needed. If this is something that sounds intriguing, make an appointment and get the ball rolling!
